  • In one of the deadliest operations for the security forces in the Valley, an Indian army colonel, a major and two soldiers, along with a Jammu and Kashmir Police sub-inspector, were killed in a counterterrorist operation in Kashmir late on Saturday.
  • The 12-hour operation, which took place at Handwara in Kupwara district, also resulted in the killing of two terrorists, the Indian Army said in a statement.
  • News agency ANI cited Vijay Kumar, inspector general of police, Jammu and Kashmir, as saying that a top Lashkar-e Taiba terrorist, identified as Haider, a Pakistani national, was killed in the operation.

  • Born in December 1989, Major Sood is an alumnus of Punjab Public School, Nabha, where his father had also studied, before joining the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, in 2008.
  • He belonged to 19 Guards and was presently serving with 31 Rashtriya Rifles in the Kupwara region of Kashmir.
  • Besides his parents — Brigadier Sood, who served with the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers and mother, Suman, who is the principal of a government school in Yamunanagar — Major Sood is survived by his wife Aakriti and two sisters.

  • In a huge loss to India’s security forces, a colonel, a major and three other security forces personnel were killed in the fierce gunbattle on Sunday in Handwara in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anuj Sood, Naik Rajesh and Lance Naik Dinesh and a Jammu and Kashmir Police Sub-Inspector, Sageer Ahmad Pathan alias Qazi attained martyrdom while fighting with the terrorists in Kashmir on May 3.
  • President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat paid tributes to the soldiers and security personnel and promised that the sacrifice of the brave soldiers will never be forgotten.
