  • Harsh Vardhan was born in Delhi to Om Prakash Goel and Sneh Lata. Vardhan finished his schooling from Anglo Sanskrit Victoria Jubilee Senior Secondary School, Daryaganj, in 1971.
  • He attended Zakir Husain Delhi College, University of Delhi, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College, Kanpur, where he graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. He earned his Master of Surgeryfrom the same college in 1983.
  • In 1993, he was elected as a member of the Delhi Assembly representing Krishna Nagar. He was appointed as the State Minister of Health and Minister of Law for Delhi.
  • He later became the state Minister of Education in 1996.Vardhan has been re-elected from the same constituency in the 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 elections.
  • He was also appointed in the Cabinet of India as Minister of Health and Family Welfare on 26 May 2014In May 2017, he was given the additional charge of Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
  • On 30 May 2019, Harsh Vardhan was sworn in as a cabinet minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s second term government. He is put in charge of the Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences.
WHO EXECUTIVE BOARD CHAIRMAN

 

  • Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan is set to take charge as the chairman of the WHO Executive Board on May 22, officials said on Tuesday.
  • Vardhan would succeed Dr Hiroki Nakatani of Japan, currently the Chairman of the 34-member WHO Executive Board.
  • The proposal to appoint India’s nominee to the executive board was signed by the 194-nation World Health Assembly on Tuesday, officials said on condition of anonymity.

  • The chairman’s post is held by rotation for one year among regional groups and it was decided last year that India’s nominee would be the Executive Board chairman for the first year starting Friday.
  • It is not a full time assignment and the minister will just be required to chair the Executive Board’s meetings, an official said.
